Arcade Fire --- Freakin' New Songs!!

Hey!  Guess what everybody?!  Arcade Fire spent some time in the studio and now there are at least 4 tracks out and they are all available for download below for the time being!  The tracks are getting a good bit of criticism, but we here at YAGN are big fans!  Download it and freaking enjoy them because they are new Aracade Fire tracks and they have only happened 2 times thus far, so consider it a treat!

Lately Mix - 06.15.10

There have been so many great new releases this year by some of "Indie Rock's" biggest bands. Outstanding efforts by The National, Dr. Dog, Beach House, and The Black Keys have made 2010 one of the best years for new music in a while. We've featured each of these artists here on YAGN in the past, and today I'd like to introduce you to some songs from lesser known bands that I have discovered in the last few weeks.

1 - Us Vs. Them - Common Prayer
2 - Black Hand - Cotton Mouth
3 - o0O0o0O0o - Oberhofer
4 - Glorylight & Christie - Cotton Jones
5 - Marathon - Tennis

Lately Mix - 06.15.10 - Yousendit Link

The National, High Violet

The National's new album, High Violet, has been out for well over a month now, but I just wanted to give it a little love here on the blog.  It is a freaking awesome album.  You all should pick this up and listen to it many, many times.

Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine

An A-list of indie and alt-country artists have come together to lend their versions of some of John Prine's favorite songs for the tribute album Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows, due out on June 22nd.  Artists featured are Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver), Conor Oberst, My Morning Jacket, Josh Ritter, Justin Townes Earle, The Avett Brothers, Old Crow Medicine Show, Drive-By Truckers Deer Tick and Those Darlins.  Pretty strong line-up, don't you think?  It is a worthy tribute album for the legendary singer/songwriter.  Check out two of my favorite tracks below and go ahead and pick this one up on the 22nd.

Delta Spirit, History from Below

Delta Spirit's sophomore LP History from Below is a slow burner without many catchy songs like their debut's "Trashcan".  It took a few listens to really appreciate, but once it caught I have found more to love with every listen.  Another one of those albums that will serve you well for enjoying a few ice cold beverages outside as the sun sets on these long summer days.  Make sure to pay attention to the background sounds on one of my favorite tracks "Scarecrow" because they really take the song to another level.  You can picture the band out on their porch recording as cars pass and birds chirp.  Good stuff.

The Black Keys, Brothers

I read somewhere My girlfriend told me that she read the following in reference to The Black Keys' latest effort, "The Black Keys are like pizza -- even when it's bad, it's good."  Now, while I think that is a pretty funny, I totally disagree.  I think that Brothers is one of their stronger albums as of late.  It is fun and different at times and has been on heavy rotation around here.  My only complaint is that it does run a little long at 55+ minutes.  Below is a link to my favorite track off of the album, "Everlasting Light," which displays Dan Auerbach's falsetto.  A great track followed by links to two recently released videos for the first two singles on the album.

Blitzen Trapper, Destroyer of the Void

Blitzen Trapper's latest Destroyer of the Void is a great album.  Their sophomore album, Wild Mountain Nation, displayed their taste for eclectic alt-country/spacey rock and had some great tracks.  Their third album, Furr, saw them lay some of their eccentricities to bed for a more focused effort.  Destroyer of the Void continues in the vein that Furr began, but it is not a continuation of it by any means.  The latest is a rootsier (I just made that word up) album.  The songs are stripped down and the album is not covered in the fuzz of their previous efforts.  They seem to be growing up.  This is a great album and the more I listen to it the better it gets.  Check out the 2 songs below and decide for yourself.

Also, check out another song on Scott's previous post here.

Band of Horses, Infinite Arms

Hey there everyone.  It's been a long couple of weeks around here, but luckily during this time there have been many albums released.  Over the next few days, I am going to post about them.  These are ones that most of you have heard already, but maybe someone hasn't.  Just humor me and enjoy.

The new Band of Horses album, Infinite Arms, is not a masterpiece by any means, but Ben Bridwell and the new line-up's third effort is definitely a fun one for summer.  The album leaves a lot to be desired lyrically and the band's sound continues to grow from their early sonic anthems to jangly 70s rock/pop easy-listening.  It is a perfect soundtrack for your next summer cookout -- a true crowd pleaser.  It slows down a little bit in the middle, but ends strong.  One of my favorite tracks, "Older", is linked below.

Well, there it is guys and gals -- I just busted my posting slump.  I am easing back into things seeing that I haven't really been on the cutting edge as of late, but at least we are both back in action!

Thursday Mix - The Giving Tree

In honor of the upcoming Blitzen Trapper release Destroyer of the Void, I decided to make this slightly tardy Thursday Mix around one of my favorite songs on the album, "The Tree." I know I'm a bit late for arbor day, but enjoy anyway!

1 - Blitzen Trapper - The Tree (featuring Alela Diane)
2 - Up a Tree (Went This Heart I Have) - Cotton Jones
3 - Family Tree - TV On the Radio
4 - Among the Pines - AA Bondy
5 - Apple Suckling Tree - Bob Dylan

New Kanye West - Power

Love him or hate him, Kanye West has done as much as any artist in the last 10 years to help shape the hip hop scene. Aside from the auto-tuned misstep of 808's and Heartbreak, Kanye has always put out quality albums and his guest verses on recent releases (see "Hate" and "Run This Town" on Jay Z's The Blueprint 3) always threaten to overshadow the title artist. "Power," from the upcoming release Good Ass Job is Kanye at his egotistical best. With a King Crimson sample, and a beat that sounds like it was swiped from Sleigh Bells, Kanye returns to form on this great track.

Thursday Mix - Every Night of the Summer

It is with the humblest of apologies that I make this post - as a friend of mine recently stated in a not so subtle jab when suggesting new music blogs: "I know this good music blog, but it never gets updated..." With that thought in mind, I thought I would post what I hope will become a regular feature on YAGN, the Thursday Mix. 5 songs, following a loose theme that will hopefully redeem our recent negligence. This week, I picked a song by The National to base this playlist around. "Gospel" reminds me of summer nights in the back yard, with a bottle of beer and good people. Download a zip file of the Mix below via You Send It.

YAGN Thursday Mix I - Every Night of the Summer

Tracklist:
1 - Futurebirds - Johnny Utah
2 - Levek - Loon and the Lion
3 - Band of Horses - Trudy
4 - Peter & The Wolf - Where Summer Goes
4 - The National - Gospel

Sunday Video

I came across this awesome video from Jill Andrews (former member of The Everybodyfields) and Matt Butcher (former member of The Outsiders, apparently). Great version of Mr. Butcher's track "Giving My Sadness A Name." Check our Jill's latest self titled EP, and Matt's solo debut Me and My Friends. Stay Gold, Ponyboy.

Free Energy, Stuck on Nothing

This Philadelphia band's debut album Stuck on Nothing is garnering a lot of great press following their strong showing at SXSW.  The album, produced by LCD Soundsystem mastermind James Murphy, is full of infectious rock/pop full of the fun from influences such as glam, southern and current indie rock/pop.  I have been spinning this album for a week now and cannot get enough of it.  It is a lot of fun and serves as a great intro into warmer weather and rolled down windows.  Check out two tracks from the album below.  The album is slated for a physical release on May 4, but is available digitally now.

Iceland Volcano Pictures

Not music related, but insane pictures from the volcano eruption in Iceland.  A slideshow of these pics would be nicely complimented by an Explosions in the Sky track.  Our thoughts are with the people of Iceland.  Link below, music later...

Drive-By Truckers, The Big To-Do

The Drive-By Truckers have done it again.  With the release of their 10th studio album, The Big To-Do, the Athens band continues their reign as the most consistently good studio (and live - they rock hard) band out there today.  While I understand that there will be many out there that disagree seeing that the Truckers do not seem to have many casual fans, you either love them or you don't, spend an afternoon revisiting their discography and you will see that there is not a truly bad album in the lot (A Blessing and a Curse is the weakest of them in the opinion of those with whom I have discussed this subject).  So, if you are a fan, check it out if you haven't already.  If you are not a fan, you might as well continue to keep a safe distance between yourself and these Southern rockers.

Happy Record Store Day

You may or may not be aware that today is "Record Store Day" (at least for a few more hours). The demise of the record store is one of the more unfortunate side effects of the digital age. Growing up, my main experience with record stores were limited to mega-retailer Blockbuster Music and Nader's Music in West Point, Georgia (the latter is where I would purchase the best new rap tape singles as a preteen before my musical tastes evolved). The first lasting experience for me in a record store took place in Athens, Georgia at Schoolkids Records. I remember walking through the door of this college town store, determined to make a "hip" purchase. What I walked away with that day was Whiskeytown's Pneumonia, which to this day remains one of my favorite albums. Ryan Adams, Caitlin Cary, and Company's third and final album was released two years after it was recorded among much controversy, and it stands strong among other alt-country masterpieces, such as Wilco's Being There and The Jayhawks Rainy Day Music. Below is the album opener and standout track Ballad of Carol Lynn. Share any good record store memories/stories in the comments section (maybe we'll be lucky enough for Ben to tell us about his Joan Baez purchase in Oxford, MS)

The Handsome Furs tour Asia

The Handsome Furs, comprised of Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade and his wife Alexei Perry, make some pretty damn good music despite the fact that he bears a striking resemblance to Marilyn Manson (especially in the picture above).  I just discovered that CNN has a special web miniseries following their tour through Asia that is pretty interesting with tales of paid-off cops and dangerous cab rides.  It is definitely worth a watch.  The link is below and I will throw up a Handsome Furs track when I get off of work.  Enjoy.

Broken Social Scene - World Sick

A few things I know about Broken Social Scene -
  1. There are a shit-ton of folks in the band and I can only name 2 of them (Kevin Drew and Feist).
  2. They have a new album coming out on May 4th.
  3. "World Sick" is an awesome song, so download it below.

New Deer Tick Track

A new track has been released from YAGN favorites Deer Tick.  It is a great song from the forthcoming album The Black Dirt Sessions.  The album is set for a release of May 25th, so mark those calendars boys and girls.  Also, catch them on the road with Dr. Dog this Spring (if you are seeing them in Birmingham on Cindo de Mayo, we will see you there).  That is all for now...enjoy.

The Black Keys, 2 Tracks from upcoming album, Brothers

Yessir!  A new release from one of the hardest working bands out there.  I love The Black Keys - have since I first heard them doing their raunchy blues rocking thing on Thickfreakness.  The boys recently took some time to do their own things and release a rock/rap album with some very respected MCs.  Dan Auerbach did not disappoint with his solo effort and I haven't listen to more than a song or two from Patrick Carney's side project, Drummer.  They return after Blakroc, the rock/rap collaboration, with these two solid tracks.  My expectations are pretty high for a really good album and the songs below and album cover pictured above are indicators that this will be true.  Brothers is slated for a May 18th release date.  Enjoy the two songs that have been released below.

Adam Arcuragi - Sin is Just an Old Archery Term

A quick share on this Sunday morning - La Blogotheque has been a favorite of mine, filming their "Take Away Shows" with various artists, in which they film these artists in cabs, stairwells, walking streets, you name it. It makes for great spontaneous moments and interactions with passer-bys and the bands themselves. One of my favorite shows from this website is from Adam Arcuragi, a favorite of ours at the blog. Here is a great version of Adam's song Sin is Just an Old Archery Term, a melancholy song that is filled with rich, anachronistic imagery.

Band of Horses, Compliments (Video)

Download the video for the track "Compliments" from Band of Horses' highly anticipated third LP, Infinite Arms, by going to the band's web site and joining the mailing list.  Totally worth it.  Also, a download of the opening track from the album releasing on May 18th below.

Horse Feathers - Belly of June

Portland, Oregon's Horse Feathers have a new album, Thistled Spring, due for release on April 20th.  "Belly of June" is the first track released from the album and continues the very enjoyable product that the band has given us in the past.  I really don't know what to say about the song other than I cannot get enough of it.  Check it out below.

Saintseneca, Grey Flag

Say what you will, but every Tuesday I look forward to checking iTunes Indie Spotlight category to see what has been released for the week.  More often than not, my search bears no fruit - but every once in a while, I come across a diamond in the rough.  My latest diamond is Saintseneca, a folk-ish group based out of Columbus, Ohio.  Grey Flag is their new brief, but enjoyable 5 song EP clocking in at roughly 15 minutes.  The EP brings to mind Brazos (click the link for a previous post) displaying a band that plays with a loose almost unrehearsed vibe that produces totally infectious songs.  I HIGHLY RECOMMEND checking this out.

Local Natives - Airplanes

As the end of season draws near here in Telluride, we at YAGN have had difficulty finding time to update the blog as much as we would like. A thousand apologies to our loyal readers (both of you). Here's a great track from LA's Local Natives, who just wrapped up a three day stint at SXSW in Austin. Airplanes is the standout track on their recent release Gorilla Manor. Enjoy this track - we promise to get back to more regular posting once the season ends!

Surfer Blood - Astro Coast

I've really been digging this album lately. With Astro Coast, Surfer Blood creates a sound that recalls 90's indie darlings Pavement, while also bringing to mind the current lo-fi fuzz of current YAGN favorites like Real Estate and Girls. Lead singer JP Pitts and the boys from West Palm Beach, FL come out swinging on this promising debut.

We Are So Smooth Now....

I recommend you check out The Morning Benders new effort, Big Echo. With a sound that recalls Phil Spector in all of his 1960's splendor (before the whole murder deal), The Morning Benders latest album is a jaunty collection of pop music. The standout track, Excuses, is a new favorite of mine, and in heavy rotation on my ipod. Make sure to buy this album on March 9.

TMB are currently streaming the full album, prior to its release, on their website.

The Morning Benders - Excuses (highly recommended)

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Let's take a trip to a simpler time when your Saturday night consisted of taking your girl out to the VFW dance and dropping her off by her curfew or her daddy was going to be waiting for you on the front porch.  The music to which you danced didn't bring you a care in the world.  You were just happy to be there dressed in your best suit with your sweetheart on your arm.  Do I know what I am talking about?  Not really, but when I listen to The Preservation Hall Jazz Band's new tribute album featuring cameos from heavyweights including Tom Waits, Yim Yames, Andrew Bird, Jason Isbell, Del McCoury, Dr. John, Steve Earle and many more, it transports me to this blissful time.  This is an album that you could picture your grandparents listening to on their gramophone.  You should definitely check this album out and keep this simpler time alive.

PitchforkTV presents Dead Man's Bones

Look at Pitchfork continuing to bring the thunder this week!  Dead Man's Bones is the previously mentioned musical project of actor Ryan Gosling.  A little creepy fun for your Monday.  I hope it is a good one everybody!

NOTE:  Sorry, I didn't really watch that prior to posting.  I thought it was more of a live video than a mini-featurette.  Oh well, guess I'll leave it up anyways.

The Beach Boys and Animal Collective

I have had the comparison I made of Animal Collective to The Beach Boys on my mind for a few days.  And when the song "College" came on my iPod, I had to check to make sure it was Animal Collective - I really thought it was The Beach Boys.  The resemblance is uncanny on this short track.  I also included a true mash-up of the 2 bands that is pretty good.  Enjoy folks.

The xx

The xx's debut album xx came out in August of last year and made many best of lists.  I just came upon them in the past 2 weeks at the insistence of a friend and I am glad that I did.  The band from London has 3 members playing guitar, bass and synthesizer/drum machine.  I recently discovered that they are all around 20 years of age and was blown away.  The album is very focused and the band seems comfortable in their own skin not having to force anything.  The tracks are smooth and well thought out.  When I was 20, nothing I did was well thought out.  I am excited to see what comes from them in the future.  xx is definitely worth the money.  Sample 2 of the tracks below including one of the standouts "Basic Space".

While I'm at it, I'll throw this one up there too

If I keep this pace up, I am going to spoil you guys.  Bowerbirds "Northern Lights" video.  I really love this song.

Beach House "Zebra" Video

Pitchfork TV has some great videos up right now.  Above is one from Beach House.  Scott featured them not too long ago.  Good stuff here.  Get more HERE.

The brilliance of Animal Collective

I don't know what took me so long, but this week I have finally realized the brilliance of Animal Collective.  The quartet out of Baltimore, Maryland are loved by bloggers across the board, but my affection has been a gradual one...until now.  Listening to their newest LP, Merriweather Post Pavilion, and their latest EP, Fall Be Kind, over the past week has brought this realization to life.  The band has mastered the art of layering sound and creating strange pop masterpieces.  Think Radiohead's experimental nature mixed with the Beach Boys' sense of harmony and transition.  Animal Collective layers organic sounds and vocal harmonies with many loops and a few electronic sounds thrown in there (more synthesizer than beeps and blips like Radiohead).  Hate or love Animal Collective, you have to agree that they continue to be inventive with each song/album that they release.  Enjoy the samples below.

A little of this and a little of that featuring an angry grizzly...

So, Dr. Dog has released the first single from their upcoming album, Shame, Shame, and it is great.  I know this might be old news to a number of you out there, but it still makes my panties wet.  Also, The Walkmen have signed with Oxford, Mississippi based label Fat Possum.  Fat Possum lays claim to great artists including The Black Keys, A.A. Bondy, Andrew Bird, Heartless Bastards, Wavves and a number of Mississippi Hill Country Bluesmen.  There is no news on a release date for their new album, but they are in the studio now recording the follow-up to You & Me (one of my favorite albums).  Just for good measure, I threw in a newish Grizzly Bear cover of  a Hot Chip song.  Enjoy everyone...

Fruit Bats - The Ruminant Band

Fruit Bats were formed in 1999 in the great city of Chicago, and have been churning out catchy, Beatlesque pop since their debut album Echoloction, released in 2001. Since signing on to Subpop in 2002, the band has released a trio of standout albums. Most recently, Eric Johnson & Co. released The Ruminant Band, their first effort in 4 years. It didn't take me long to become absolutely obsessed with this album. Like label-mates, The Shins, Fruit Bats create complex pop music that is easily digestible at first listen, but over time surprises you with its complexity, both lyrically and melodically. There really isn't a bad song on the album, but below, I have linked the opener, Primitive Man. Other standouts include, Being on Your Own (which would fit right in on Abbey Road), and Singing Joy to the World (which is the only song in history to reference both Three Dog Night and a Prince song). Fruit Bats play both Birmingham and Atlanta in March, for those of you lucky enough to still reside in that part of the South! Check their website below:

Dr. Dog New Album and Tour

I really love this band.  The more I revisit their back catalog, the more I see the potential and growth that they have shown throughout their career.  On April 6th, the boys from Philadelphia abandon the friendly confines of their home studio, where they have recorded their previous 5 albums including 2008's incredible Fate, for Anti-Records' professional studios and producer.  There are not any tracks from the new album, entitled Shame Shame, out yet, but Dr. Dog has stated that when they get to 20,000 fans on Facebook they will release a single from the album.  Go fan them now!  The band also just kicked off a tour with supporting acts including Deer Tick and will be making a stop at WorkPlay in Birmingham, AL on el Cinco de Mayo.  Tickets are $15, so get 'em fast.

Here is a little taste of the band, please seek out their stuff and buy it!  It is perfect for vinyl for you audiophiles out there.

Beach House - Teen Dream

Teen Dream is the 3rd release from Baltimore's Beach House, and their first on the Sub Pop label. Like their previous efforts, Teen Dream's focal points are Victoria Legrand's mesmerizing vocals and keyboards, which again deliver on this album. While building on their trademark hazy sound, Beach House makes a nice step forward with this album, creating songs that not only have the wonderful rawness of their earlier releases, but also introduce more memorable melodies and a more polished sound. Created in a converted Church in upstate New York, Teen Dream has several great songs, including the opener, "Zebra" and "10 Mile Stereo." For my money though, the standout track on the album is "Used to Be," which I've linked below. Enjoy!

Vinyl

So, for Christmas I received the best gift in my new record player and some stellar vinyls.  I have since ordered a few and quickly realized that I am really going to enjoy collecting records.  As of now, I have the following vinyls:

Wilco, A Ghost Is Born
Dr. Dog, We All Belong
Dan Auerbach, Keep It Hid
Elvis Perkins In Dearland, Elvis Perkins In Dearland
Bon Iver, For Emma, Forever Ago
Fleet Foxes, Fleet Foxes and Sun Giant EP

I also have Department of Eagles In Ear Park and The Walkmen You and Me on order.  My question to the loyal fans out there of YAGN is what albums would you most like on vinyl?  Post in the comments section and talk amongst yourselves.  This could be very interesting.

Yeasayer, Odd Blood

Yeasayer's debut album All Hour Cymbals showed signs of promise for the up and coming indie-synth/pop group.  Their new album, Odd Blood, continued these promising signs with the first single "Ambling Alp", a great song that came very close to making the list of best songs of 2009.  The new album as a whole did not sit well with me through the first listen, but after a few listens I have warmed up to it a bit.  It can be an enjoyable listen at times, but it starts off on a weak note with the first track "The Children" and does not make up for it.  I once saw this band live opening for Man Man and it was just alright...Their studio efforts are much like their live show - good, but not something that you are going to go around talking about.  Both of their albums have strong songs, but they are still lacking with forgettable tracks surrounding the truly great ones.  Would I recommend buying the album?  No, but I would suggest keeping an eye on the band.

Acting out

Welcome back!

Hello old friends.  If there were an award for most overdue blog post, I think that I might be in the running.  That work thing has gotten in the way a bit lately, but I won't fall back on excuses.

So, now that that is over...

I have never had much faith in the actor turned musical artist or vice versa, but recently I have been swayed to think otherwise.  There are 2 notable actors turned musicians that I have been listening to a good bit of lately.

Jason Schwartzman, famous for his recurring appearances in films by indie auteurs such as Wes Anderson and David O. Russell, has been making music for quite sometime.  His recent solo project, Coconut Records, is his most appealing by far.

Also, Ryan Gosling and his bandmate Zach Shields are making some spooky pop music in their outfit Dead Man's Bones.  They are backed by a child choir on their debut which aids the band in creating an afterworldly experience.

Both actors are making music that is original and enjoyable.  Each project was released a while back, but each is relevant and worth a listen.  You can sample the tracks below, but if you like what you hear please go out and buy the albums.

Welcome back

Since I have been without the internet for a little while and watching the snow melt, I kinda got out of the loop.  It is nice to do that sometimes though because you come back to some great stuff.  Daytrotter has released at least 2 great sessions while I was away in Dave Rawlings Machine featuring Gillian Welch and Roadside Graves.  Laundromatinee also debuted a session by Horse Feathers.  And if that wasn't enough to warmly welcome me back to the wonderful world of the internet, iTunes released an exclusive live session with Blind Pilot.  You can sample below, but to download the free sessions visit Daytrotter.com and Laundromatinee.com...Blind Pilot isn't free, but you will not miss the $5 spent on the session - trust me.

It's The Little Things...

Sometimes it's the little things in life that can bring the most pleasure in life. Finding that old crumpled $10 bill in a jacket pocket. A much needed Office rerun. Viva Paper Towels (fully endorsed by YAGN). One of my favorite little things is when your ipod gives you that perfect song in the midst of a shuffle that brings a smile to your face. One such occurrence of this phenomenon recently for me was Phoenix' Long Distance Call. A truly great song from one of our favorite bands of 2009 (landed near the top in both our Top 10 lists). Check out Phoenix' 2006 release "It's Never Been Like That" if you were a fan of this year's release - more great stuff from the French synth-rock geniuses.

Our apologies to the Bowerbirds...

Here at YAGNW, we have put a lot of thought into it and we owe the Bowerbirds an apology.  Their album Upper Air is a truly great one that deserved a spot in our Best Albums of 2009 list, but we caught onto it a few weeks too late.  If you haven't heard it, do yourself a favor and check it out on iTunes.  See the previous post containing the standout track "Northern Lights".  And to the Bowerbirds, we salute you.

This is only temporary...

Hello everyone.  I am currently experiencing computer issues at home, but am busy working it out.  The blog might be quiet for the weekend, but we will be back in full force as soon as it is rectified.  For now, enjoy this video for "No You Don't" by Islands featuring Michael Cera.

Sing me back home...

Well, it seems pretty official when you get a visit from the Web Sheriff, but I do feel bad that I couldn't get the music out to you.  I figured that I would do my best to make it up to all you faithful readers out there with some good tracks soaked in traditional music.  From haunting to downright fun, these tracks should hold a spot in your 'Recently Added' playlist.  Not many words tonight, just songs.  Enjoy.
