YAGN Essentials: Cotton Jones, Tall Hours in the Glowstream

YAGN Essentials is a new feature highlighting albums that we think are must haves.  If you have them already, then maybe these posts will make you revisit them.  If you don't have them yet, get a feel for the music then go out and get it.

Cotton Jones is high up there on the list of YAGN favorites.  The band's main components are former Page France members Michael Nau and Whitney McGraw.  Nau's vocals can never do any wrong in our opinion and they don't on this album.  Also, check out their incredible live session on Halfway House here.  And as a Presidents' Day Weekend treat, I included a download of a personal favorite of mine (EB and I always play this track on our road trips) -- the Daytrotter version of Cotton and Velvet.

Don't forget the summer...

It is 2 degrees (but apparently it feels like -10) outside and all I can do is wish that the summer would return.  Too bad that is going to be a while, so for the time being let's get some music going.  These tracks have no real connection other than you need to listen to them.  Now!

The first band is a little more well know than the latter.  Cotton Jones is the most recent project of former Page France front man, Michael Nau.  Along with fellow Page France alum and very cute, Whitney McGraw, the band has put out three EPs and two LPs.  While Page France was a very whimsical pop band, Cotton Jones pulls more from early psych rock with some hints of 60's surf rock on their album, Paranoid Cocoon.

Personally, I say check out Page France and Cotton Jones, if you haven't before.  But if you must choose one, Cotton Jones would be the safest bet because it seems as though Page France has been relegated to an afterthought for Nau and McGraw.

Brazos

Next up is Brazos, Martin Crane's band hailing from Austin, TX.  I actually had the opportunity to catch this band while I did my much-too-short stint in Austin.  They played at a little coffee shop on the East side and it was a great experience.

What do I like about this band?  A lot.  I really enjoy the fact that on their earlier tracks they play so loosely.  I can picture them popping into the studio to play around and taking whatever they like the most to make an EP.  They recently released a new album, Phosphorescent Blues, which seems to have more focus than their previous releases, Feeding Frenzy EP and A City Just As Tall EP.

So, I present to you a track from Phosphorescent Blues and another from a live session on KVRX.  And as an added bonus, a track from Peter and the Wolf for you that seems to fit with the longing for summer.  Enjoy.
